Students, faculty and staff at San Diego Mesa College are invited to march in the 37th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade on Sunday, Jan. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m.
Psychology major Emerald Moreno is inspired by a passion for understanding and interpreting others, along with a deep faith that psychology is her calling. She plans to transfer to a university to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, minor in Spanish, and continue exploring a future in law.
After a major surgery and months of recovery, Tracey Kushner faced a decision that would reshape her future. In 2024, she returned to San Diego Mesa College determined to finish the degree she had started years earlier.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — San Diego Mesa College proudly celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2026 during its annual Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 29, 2026, honoring 1,958 graduates who earned more than 2,017 academic degrees and 414 certificates. A total of 727 graduates participated in the ceremony, joined by family, friends, faculty, staff, and community supporters.

Students, faculty and staff at San Diego Mesa College are invited to march in the 37th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade on Sunday, Jan. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m.
“We would love to have a strong Mesa College presence and invite the campus to join the festivities,” said Victoria Miller, Dean of Student Affairs. “We will march in the parade with great pride, wearing our unified college shirts, present a grand float which encompasses the theme of ‘Living the Dream, Let Freedom Ring’ while having fun connecting with our community.”
For the past decade, Mesa’s participation in the parade has been organized by Courtney Lee, Senior Student Services Assistant in Student Affairs. The parade, which is held by the Zeta Sigma Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, will march down North Harbor Drive to the Embarcadero and usually includes 100-200 marchers from Mesa College.
“The parade is important because it’s a community building event,” Lee said. “Creating a physical community for the students is very important for student success.”
This year, the float is being built on a flatbed trailer by Lee, Drama Theater Technician Chris Renda and Stockroom Supervisor Frank Fernandez.
